  Parkinson SuperWalk

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects approximately 100,000 Canadians and their 400,000 family members, loved ones and care partners. Parkinson Canada will be holding its annual Parkinson SuperWalk to raise money for those affected by Parkinson's.  Your support is needed to ensure better treatment and ultimately a future without Parkinson's. Join us for a walk and a day of fun for people of all ages! Most importantly, join us for your chance to change the course of Parkinson's in Canada.

A hands-on exploration of over 150 years of medical advancement in Canada. Learn about healthcare practices around the time of Confederation. Handle medical artefacts and learn about treatments for various ailments by asking different 'professionals' for their medical advice - some advice will be scientifically sound and some will be quackery! Create and take home your own home remedy to a common ailment from the 1800s. Conclude your journey through Canada's medical history with an engaging talk about medicine and health care presented by a special guest!
Recommended for ages 6-12. Accompanying adults welcome. Pre-registration required (spaces are limited).

It's sure to be an informative edition of 'Tuesday Night at the Museum' at the Lennox & Addington County Museum & Archives in Napanee! On September 19th at 7pm, photographer and author Steve Manders will present "The Earliest Transportation and Communications in Lennox and Addington County."

Steve's presentation will cover the early railways, tramways, colonization roads, earliest highways, and logging routes.   This presentation will reveal what was there 150 years ago and what remains today.  It is a study of special dynamics, how our transportation systems evolved with time and impacted on the local economy. Steve's book "The First Spike" is available at the Museum for $39.50 which includes 232 pages, and over 450 colour photos.

  he Spanish Influenza: Free Public Presentation

In the fall of 1918, nearing the end of WWI, Kingston suffered from one of the deadliest epidemics in recorded history. As both an important military centre and in a prime geographic location near the St. Lawrence river, Kingston admitted thousands of people in permanent and temporary hospitals during both the war and Spanish flu outbreak. This is the story of the Limestone City and its fight to understand, control, and conquer the Spanish influenza. A presentation by Queen's Medical Student and Margaret Angus Research Fellow Andrew Belyea. Refreshments will follow. Special thanks to Trustees of the Estate of Larry Gibson, Graeme Fraser  and Jay Rayner, for their generous support of this fellowship.

In celebration of Science Literacy Week (September 18-24th), we will be holding a special "space age" storytime at the L&A's Dark Sky Viewing Area.

Not only will participants enjoy storytime in the great outdoors, this is also a great opportunity to try out the library's telescopes and experience star-gazing at the most southerly dark sky site in Ontario. 

This event coincides with another Dark Sky Viewing Area event: The Early Autumn Sky' Stargazing Evenings with Joe Gilker, which begins at 8:30pm. Stick around to get a laser-guided tour of the night sky and hear from the experts. More information here

This eye-opening outdoor memory and mapping activity for young historians includes revelations of plagues, politicians, doctors, immigrants, and nurses, and spans nearly 100 years!
