Take The Challenge to Fight Cancer With The Juravinski Cancer Centre

This story starts with the journey of ONE woman, but it is a journey many of us have been on, or someone we love has. A journey some of us will have to face, or that ones we love will endure.

Jessica Durka, a local investment advisor with BMO Nesbitt Burns, recently completed her journey with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer. She is now in remission, and as a survivor, her biggest goals are to spread awareness about cancer and help those who are or will be on their own journey.

The Juravinksi Cancer Centre, our own local cancer centre, has the ability to do what was thought impossible not too long ago- Stem Cell Transplants. This is a life saving proceedure, but many lives are lost waiting on a list. This is because the Juravinski Cancer Centre does not have the ability to facilitate this process in a timely manner for all of those who need it. The waiting lists are large, but their space to perform this life saving proceedure is small. They are working to fix that, and to help more people beat cancer.

And that's where YOU come in.

The Ontario Government has funded a large portion of this project. They have donated 30 million dollars, but there is a call to action for the community to band together and raise the other 3 million dollars.

Jessica Durka would like to challenge the community, made up of individuals, local businesses, farmers and families; to take on the fight against cancer and to donate and fundraise for the Juravinski Cancer Centre Stem Cell Transplant Project.

For the month of September let's see what we can do TOGETHER to make a difference.

To make a donation and learn more, visit this site:
www.hamiltonhealth.ca/ourjourneyjhcc

Also on that page, you can click the link to purchase one of Jessica's Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Awareness lime-green bracelets, and wear your support on your arm!

Norfolk County celebrates Canada 150 with a five-community exhibition of local arts, culture, and heritage in downtown Delhi, Port Dover, Port Rowan, Simcoe, and Waterford.

The celebration is September 22 to 24. The event will showcase Norfolk County visual art, music, performance art, food, history, and heritage.

Get a passport for unlimited access to free activities, performances, and exhibitions in each community. Additional events requiring separate tickets are also planned. Passports will be on sale for a suggested donation of $10 soon.

The project is supported by a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport’s Ontario 150 program, which was instituted to fund events and projects showcasing Ontario’s innovative spirit, culture, and community diversity. Contributions from local businesses, community organizations, and Norfolk County are supplementing the grant funds to increase the event’s impact.

The Norfolk 150 Celebration of Culture includes two legacy initiatives. The first is a series of murals painted in each downtown by Port Dover artist Ryan Szucs, based on his typographic map design of Norfolk County. The murals will be painted on the Hungarian Hall (Delhi), Dover Cheese Shop (Port Dover), Wiggan’s (Port Rowan), Leon’s (Simcoe), and Waterford TV & Appliances (Waterford).

The second lasting outcome is the establishment of an arts and culture enhancement fund, in association with the Norfolk Community Foundation. The interest earned on the principal investment will be awarded to cultural activities in Norfolk County annually.

Saturday, September 23

Presented by
SCOR

The Battle of Vimy Ridge in northern France, April 9th to 12th, 1917 is considered to be one of the defining events in Canada's history. Lieutenant Leslie H. Miller, a soldier with the Canadian Expeditionary Force (1914-1919), sent acorns home to Canada that he had gathered up after the Battle of Vimy Ridge, April 1917. These acorns are now large majestic oaks that are growing on his former farm, today the home of the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church, in Ontario.

The Vimy Oaks Legacy Corporation is a not-for-profit corporation made up of volunteers promoting the memory and legacy of Canadians who fought in the First World War through the planting of "Vimy Oak" saplings from Lieutenant Miller's farm. Saplings are available for sale at vimyoakslegacy.ca.

A Vimy Oak was planted at the Port Rowan Legion in April, 2017, in honour of the Norfolk County soldiers who fought at Vimy Ridge. The Norfolk 150 Celebration of Culture is honoured to include a concert at the Port Rowan Legion in celebration of this meaningful commemoration.

Ontario West Insurance Brokers

The former LCBO hosts two exhibitions of local artwork: an exhibition of paintings by William Edgar Cantelon, one of Norfolk County’s most famous painters, and The Naturalist's Closet, by Marguerite Larmand, one of Norfolk County's leading contemporary artists.

William Edgar Cantelon

Cantelon (1866-1950) was a visionary and an artist who devoted his life to the tireless pursuit of preserving the history of Norfolk County. His studio was located in downtown Simcoe. During good weather, he bicycled up and down the concession roads sketching and painting. He painted the ordinary - family burial grounds, churches, flour mills, tanneries and homes as well as the people who lived here. Hundreds of these paintings still exist today and collectively they tell the story of early Norfolk.

The Naturalist's Closet

Presented by
Simcoe Rotary Club

The Naturalist’s Closet is series of coats that bring attention to aspects of the natural world. Each coat is made with the assistance of support staff in a school, gallery or museum and by community volunteers under the guidance of artist and facilitator Marguerite Larmand. Techniques such as appliqué and crewel embroidery are used and finished coats are gifted to the site in which they were made.

Women's Services hosts the 2nd Annual "Hope in High Heels" Walk in Simcoe on Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 at Simcoe Composite School.  It is often said that you can never truly understand another's experience until you have walked in their shoes. This event features local men collecting pledges to walk a block in women's shoes, with all money raised directly benefitting our local Women's Services. Caring and empathetic men from our community will publicly demonstrate their support for the women and children who have experienced violence in Haldimand & Norfolk by meeting at Simcoe Composite School and 'slipping into something a little less comfortable' to begin their walk at noon.
A $25 registration fee includes shoes, and a light luncheon provided as a thank you for stepping up.  The community is encouraged to come out and cheer these guys on!
To register for the "Hope in High Heels" Fundraiser, please contact jane@hnws.on.ca or call 519-426-8048 ext. 203.

Norfolk Arts Centre, Embodiment NORFOLK 150

Norfolk Arts Centre, Embodiment

Saturday, September 23

Embodiment is a 30-year retrospective of ceramic sculpture by Governor General’s Award-winning artist Susan Low-Beer. The exhibition draws major work from several series of sculptures documenting the artists’ ongoing engagement with the clay body and how it sits in space. From the totemic stackings of Still Dances, to the architecturally engaged Rocksbreath series, the artist has pushed the medium of clay into a diversity of manifestations.

There is a meditative, spiritual quality to Low-Beer’s human figures that are often genderless and unclothed, but marked by ornate patterns that reference diverse cultures. Many of the figures are composed of fragments of other figures, other bodies, amalgamated into a new whole. The body is a vessel for the spirit and the breath; Low-Beer presents works that prompt a heightened awareness of humanity and a shared perspective on this mortal coil.

Co-curated by Jasmina Jovanovic of the Art Gallery of Algoma and Stuart Reid, this exhibition brings together seminal works by Low-Beer borrowed from private and public collections across Canada. Embodiment will accompanied by a forthcoming publication in both languages documenting this important body of work.

This project is generously funded through Department of Canadian Heritage, Museum Assistance Program.Organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Algoma and generously funded through the Department of Canadian Heritage, Museum Assistance Program.
